Sealant
Stone sealer is absolutely necessary if you want to maintain a stone in pristine condition. Without it, the soiling and staining familiar with an uncared for surface will become apparent very, very quickly.
Obviously you need to start with a thoroughly clean surface , either on floors or walls, then you can start to building the protection with an appropriate sealer.
The type of stone you have will depend on how it's treated, one sealer will not produce the same result as another, each type of natural stone having different characteristics and consequently differing solutions needed.
Slate, marble, travertine and even block pavers need a sealer that will 'adhere' to the surface or penetrate deeply , allow traction without becoming slippery and above all 'last'.
We find that the longer lasting finish is first by penetration of a protective solution and then a wear layer being applied that can be 'topped up' directly or added to your cleaning water.
Maintenance obviously depends on where your stone is situated and what kind of wear and tear it is likely to endure. Choosing your flooring wisely makes a big difference to the life of the product not just being considered for its looks alone.
Application
Application can be done by by roller, sponge, spray or with a cloth depending on ' as instructed ' by your suppliers. Adhering to the instructions will make the difference between succeeding or failing, literally.
After taking considerable time and effort to have the right floor installed an equal consideration should be given to its protection and maintenance by means of good quality products applied and a little TLC afterwards.

Aftercare
Periodically you should check that the surface is not becoming dull and worn enough to lose its protection.
With the correct aftercare products you can maintain the life of your chosen stone indefinitely, but does require a maintenance programme being followed after any stone sealer has been applied.
Every time you apply any product, follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter and don't be tempted to 'skip' any of the relevant stages from start to finish.
