Tiling With Mosaics

The professional approach for tiling with mosaics is firstly to look at the finish of your existing walls.

You must have flat walls to work on, or the finish of the mosaics will dramatically show any defects that are already there.

Rub down walls or have them re-skimmed if necessary to produce an even surface that's good enough to paint, that way you know the tiling will fix without any flaws.

Things you'll need to consider before wall tiling with mosaics would be;

That multiples of mosaics on any wall, leave little or no cutting and as an example a 2.4 metre high wall using 50mm mosaics will have '48 cuts' at one end if you calculate wrong.
At the height of any wall you should finish with a FULL tile to avoid cuts.
Window openings should start with a full tile at the corner of reveals or adjust the opening to suit.
Use a suitable adhesive which allows for minimum spread as this 'deforms' the finished tiling.
Purchase a mosaic trowel that has a 3-4mm notch which keeps the depth of adhesive to a minimum.
Be prepared to 'pin' the sheets of mosaic to reduce the amount of slip.

Floor tiling with mosaics will follow the same rules, without the need to worry about tiles 'slipping' or moving as they would on walls.

And as a guide, I would suggest that you regularly clean your tiling as it's extremely hard to clean after the adhesive is set, more so with mosaics than normal tiling as the amount of jointing is always fairly extensive.

You'll also find that there isn't a great deal of waste as there normally is with other tiling so the percentage you should allow for cutting and waste would be no more than 5%.

Grouting is a fairly labour intensive job and you should take care to only grout about 1 square metre of mosaics at a time, until you become fairly proficient at cleaning off.
