Tiling Stairs

Tiling Stairs And Steps

Tiling stairs or steps doesn't take long once you've mastered a few basic rules, try following these guidelines for fitting;

  • Measure the treads and risers accurately
  • Use tiles or stone suitable for the job
  • Internally use flexible adhesive and grout on wood
  • Externally use appropriate materials for the work

Materials can be purchased from all good tile stockist and information on what is best used in different situations is readily available.

(Any questions? Fill in the form at the end of the page for answers!)

OK, that's the theory bit organised, now let's look at the practical side.

If you take a look at the stairs I've completed above (that were originally wood) , we can use this as our guide.

The tread is the part you walk on and the riser is the vertical part that joins each step.

If you are working on wood which is presumably inside, you will have to 'cut off' the nosing which is the bit that sticks out slightly at the front of each tread.

The reason you have to do this, is to provide yourself with a square edge to the front, enabling you to form a true right angle at the corner or front of each step.

Once prepared you can begin tiling all the risers first in a true straight line, working up the first riser, following the joint line through the steps...up the front of the second riser...repeating the action until you reach the top of the first step.

This is repeated for each riser until you reach the top of your stairs or steps.

You can reverse the action and tile from the top down.

Please be aware that ALL joints should run 'in line' with each other to produce a quality finish so use a chalk line or long straight edge to mark 'through' the whole length.

Starting from the top or bottom again, tile each 'tread' or the area that would be the top of that step, so that all joints are running in line both vertically and horizontally through the steps creating a continuous line from top to bottom.

In the pictures above it's a 'half bond' so gauge this accordingly.

All that needs to be done is grout to finish.

I will be producing a video to follow these stages which will be available with other videos to view at my facebook page .
