Floor Levelling
When should floor levelling be carried out?
As a guide I'd say when a difference of 3-5mm is apparent over a 3 Metre space of floor and be more aware when laying tiles in a diagonal pattern.
The tiles will 'kick' quite noticeably when laying on a diagonal, mainly because the length of the tile is taken from corner to corner when using this design and any difference in level will greatly increase the deflection on an uneven floor.
A little time and money spent on the preparation of any floor will pay dividends, as the result enables a smooth finish to be achieved without the time consuming need to lift occasional tiles to correct problem areas.
This slide show (to be added) highlights the process needed to carry out the necessary work.
All of this is straight forward on solid floors but requires a degree of expertise when floor levelling on wooden floors, which will need an isolation membrane laid over the entire area, which prevents tiles or joints cracking or a flexible latex mix.
In some cases both could be needed to level and prevent movement prior to tiling on wood. Take a look at this short video and see how easily tiling can be achieved over wood floors.
Should you avoid using these methods to reduce costs, could in fact result in the floor having to be lifted and started all over again!!!
