diy wetroom installation

The diy wetroom design guide is for adaption to a timber floor as many walk-in showers are created from existing bathrooms, although many steps are similar on solid floor construction.

*FREE DIY DELIVERIES NATIONWIDE*

'Free survey areas' - Abergavenny, Barry, Blaenavon, Bridgend, Caldicot, Cardiff, Chepstow, Cwmbran, Magor, Merthyr, Newbridge, Newport, Penarth, Porthcawl, Pontypool, Pontypridd, Raglan, Risca. includes ALL CF & NP areas.

Follow links to videos wherever possible.

N.B. If bathroom floor heating is being installed all electrical preparation must be completed prior to step 9.

STAGE 1 OF DIY WETROOM/steps 1-5

1. Firstly check to see if you will be able to connect the shower waste to the drains, as your existing bath outlet will be above floor level.
Remove floorboards to see whether your waste can be connected internally or taken through an external wall, alternatively a pump can be fitted to remove waste quite easily.

2. The type of shower base I would suggest is a premier deck from ncdirect which has all the components supplied within one range.
The videos shown will clarify the options available.

3. Apply the tanking as described in the video section following instructions as shown, you are then in a position to think about your tiling options remembering that mosaics are by far the best option for your wetroom shower base.

4. Calculate the number of tiles required by dividing the square metres of wall and floor by the tiles per square metre, allowing for mosaic in the shower area.

5. When choosing tiles particularly in wet areas always use water resistant adhesive and grout for walls and flexible adhesive and grout for the floor.

STAGE 2 OF DIY WETROOM/steps 6-10

6. If you are fitting a shower screen, seat or grab supports a solid wall will be good to support the weight, if however you have a timber stud wall you will have to fit strengthening supports prior to tiling.

7. Your tiling can be set out in 2 ways;
a. Tile to walls first and then complete floors later.
b. If tile joints are to follow from floor up vertical joints, you must tile the floor first.
The reverse is difficult to achieve even for experienced tilers.

8. Form supports to hold your second course of wall tiles, as the first course is normally 'cut in' after to allow for any undulation or change in the floor level.

9. Lay under tile heating if being included or simply lay your floor tiles (as shown in the video) allowing for any falls, ensuring that mosaics over the base are in multiples of full tiles to avoid unecessary cutting.
Complete floor tiling and joint to same.

10. Silicone seal to all internal angles both vertically and horizontally in an appropriate wet room sealant and allow to cure.
Colour matching silicones are now available from all reputable tile stockists.

STAGE 3 OF DIY WETROOM/steps 11-15

11. Having completed the tiling you are now ready to fit everything together, following any fitting instructions supplied, ensure that all components are present before moving on.

12. Erect shower screens or curtain as per manufacturers instructions using another pair of hands if necessary.
Silicone seal after fitting.

13. Fit shower seat, grab rail or supports ensuring that they are water tight and securely fitted with the appropriate fixings.

14. Fit all sanitaryware and seal to base or wall if mounted to prevent any leaking that might occur no matter how small, as this will compromise the waterproofing.

15. In some instances the falls required could be difficult to achieve and a 'contained' area can be achieved by fitting a soft edged mosaic to a set area on the floor alleviating the problem of water tracking across the floor.
