Clay Paving Tiles

Clay paving tiles from Dennis Ruabon have been produced primarily for covering existing concrete driveways as an alternative for traditional block paving, thereby negating the need to remove literally tons of concrete matter and dispose of it to landfill sites or other alternatives (All this prior to commencing the process of re-filling the drive with the layers necessary to build a new block paved driveway).

Once laid there is litttle or no difference between clay paving tiles and traditional block paving in appearance and the benefits of laying clay paving tiles are that they are permanently bonded to existing deep base concrete, are completely sealed with weather resistant grout on completion and need no maintenance such as refilling of sand, laborious weeding or sealing to prevent colour loss.

Being made of clay the colour is natural and fights strongly against colour loss from ultra violet light, wear from foot and vehicle traffic and of course weather abbrasion such as wind, rain and frost.

Our first installation not only had an existing drive to be completed but we were also asked to provide a concreted area to be covered in clay paving tiles, which was originally paved in flagstones, to further compliment the drive.

This was constructed with a 1:3:6 mix of concrete that incorporated 'fibres' from TDP Eurofibres which allowed an impressive strength to be provided for laying of the clay paving tiles. The customary curing time was allowed for the concrete to cure prior to laying.

All fixing was done with Ardex adhesives in accordance with fixing guidelines to a 90 degree herringbone pattern.

These products are not what I would describe as being the easiest to use for the DIY'er, however they resulted in bonding the tiles extremely well and were difficult to move after setting had taken place.

The notable difference for those familiar with block paving is that after the 'borders' are laid in adhesive, you then work backwards from completed work as is normal with tiling, instead of laying forwards off completed work as is normal with traditional block paving.

The other difference is that all clay paving tiles are regularly spaced with a space between for permanent grouting.

For example... each tile length is 195mm and the space or joint is 5mm so the regular spacing for each course laid is 200mm.

This would give consecutive courses of 200mm, 400mm, 600mm and so on until you near your border and then 'cut in' as necessary.

Currently there is nothing like this on the market today and the stages to produce the clay paving tile drive that is the first domestic installation in the UK.

Mike says

"This really has got me hooked, it's a great mix of tiling AND basic construction work, albeit with specialist adhesives and here's the most appealing aspect is that ALL the joints are sealed with a permanent grout which means no more weeding, re-sanding or cleaning out moss and debris.

A lot of clay paving tile installations will carry on over the next few months and I'll be only too pleased to show much more than we have on the website at the moment.
